May 2013 marked the heart of the Boca Grande fishing season as large numbers of tarpon moved into Southwest Florida and action picked up across multiple fisheries. In addition to tarpon, anglers experienced strong flats fishing, with snook, redfish, large trout, Spanish mackerel, mangrove snapper, and even cobia showing up consistently throughout the area.
Tarpon Activity in Boca Grande – May 2013
Tarpon were firmly established in the area throughout May 2013, and their presence was felt across the passes, beaches, and nearby waters. Some days produced multiple hookups and extended battles, while others were more measured, offering a clear picture of just how many fish were holding in the Boca Grande area as the season progressed into summer.
Redfish, Snook, and Trout – May 2013
Redfish fishing remained very strong during May 2013, with multiple schools holding in the area and feeding consistently. High-action days were common, with most redfish averaging 5–7 pounds and several larger fish mixed in over the 10-pound mark. Live sardines (whitebait), pinfish, and cut ladyfish were the most productive baits throughout the month.
Snook fishing was excellent throughout May 2013, with large numbers of fish averaging 22–26 inches and several larger snook pushing well past the 30-inch mark, including a few over 40 inches. As the month progressed, snook began gathering and migrating toward the passes and beaches. Scaled sardines were the bait of choice, though artificial lures and flies also produced steady action. At the time, the 2013 snook season remained closed, allowing these fish to continue building strong numbers.
Large “gator” trout were also a highlight during May 2013, with consistent catches of fish in the 3–6 pound range while targeting redfish and snook. May is typically the tail end of the big trout bite, as spawning wraps up and warming water temperatures push these fish into deeper areas.
