The fishing to start 2016 has been really good! Big Trout, aka “Gators” are invading the flats, Redfish are still hitting, Sheepshead are all over and some nice Flounder have even showed up.
The Redfish bite has been pretty steady lately. Most of the fish are in the 3lb-5lb range which is perfect if you are wanting to take a few home but I am catching some well over the 30″ mark. Most of the Redfish are hitting on shrimp which is one of my favorite baits to fishing this time of year. Shrimp are so effective and you never know what your going to catch! One cast a red the next cast a trout. The cast after that….???? Who knows?
The Trout fishing has really picked up the last few weeks. Lots of nice size trout have invaded the flats in the Boca Grande and Pine Island areas. Most of the fish are in the 15″-18″ range and a few are as big as 25″. If you like to catch big trout now is the time to go.
The Snook fishing has slowed up a little after what I can only call an EPIC December. The cooler weather we are having usually does this but I am still catching some nice fish. You just have to be a little more patient and fish a touch slower.
The Sheepshead are finally starting to show up. They are one of the best fighting fish around and during the months of January and February they show up all around our inshore and nearshore structure to spawn. They are also great table fare!
Flounder have been coming aboard regularly as well. I have found a few areas that are holding some decent numbers of these great tasting fish.Just a quick reminder the 2016 Boca Grande Tarpon season is coming up and I am already close to 50% booked. If you are wanting to get in on some of the best Tarpon fishing in the world you need to start planning now!
Hope to see you soon and….
