Double redfish action on a winter Boca Grande fishing charter.
Boca Grande & Punta Gorda, Florida
As I’m sitting here writing this report, we’re experiencing the coldest weather we’ve had in over 16 years here in Southwest Florida. This extended cold snap is definitely going to change a few things over the next couple of weeks — but the good news is there will still be plenty of fish to be caught if you know where to look and how to adjust.
February fishing around Boca Grande and Punta Gorda is all about understanding winter patterns, slower presentations, and targeting the right water at the right tide.
Cold Weather Fishing Tip: During extreme cold snaps, slowing your presentation and targeting deeper water on low tides has been the key to consistent redfish and sheepshead action across Charlotte Harbor.

Redfish Report – Strong & Consistent
The redfish bite has been very consistent throughout much of Charlotte Harbor, including Gasparilla Sound, Pine Island Sound, and the East Wall.
-
Live shrimp has been the top producer
-
Best setup lately: shrimp on a 1/4 oz jighead
-
Free-lining shrimp is always a great option, especially if you’re seeing fish or working areas with previous success
If you’re specifically targeting redfish during these colder winter conditions, our redfish fishing charters in Boca Grande and Punta Gorda are dialed in for seasonal patterns, tide movement, and slower presentations that consistently produce fish.
The redfish are already in a true winter pattern, pushing into deeper holes and creeks on the super-low winter tides, then spreading out onto the flats as the water rises.
I’ve also been doing very well using Berkley Gulp Nemesis Prawn, working:
-
A jigging action over sandy areas
-
A steady retrieve over grass

Spotted Seatrout – Tough but Possible
Trout fishing has been okay, but not great, especially with this prolonged cold weather. I’ve been catching a lot of undersized fish, and the bigger trout have been harder to locate.
That said, I’m still picking up a few keepers in Gasparilla Sound and Pine Island Sound — but I’ve definitely had to work for them.
What’s been producing:
-
Shrimp on a jighead
-
Free-lined shrimp under a popping cork
-
Gulp Dragon Tail, which has been getting just as many bites as live bait
This bite should improve quickly once water temperatures stabilize.

Sheepshead – Winter Favorites
Sheepshead love cold weather, and the bite has been strong.
I’ve been doing really well on:
-
Low tides
-
The flats and in creeks
If you’ve fished with me before, you know I’m not big on dock fishing — but there’s no doubt the docks are loaded right now.
Best baits:
-
Shrimp
-
Fiddler crabs (hard to beat)
Tip: Let them nibble until the rod loads before setting the hook. It takes patience, but you’ll catch a lot more fish.
Pompano – Pleasant Surprise
Pompano have been making a nice showing this winter as well. I’ve been able to consistently put a few in the box, often while targeting trout. Always a welcome surprise.
Snook Outlook – Holding On
Snook fishing is going to be a little tough in the short term, and I’m hoping they all make it through these extremely cold nights.
Most of the snook have already pushed into deeper water, which is a good thing. As soon as we start getting warmer days and nights, they should be hungry and ready to bite.
February Fishing FAQ – Boca Grande & Punta Gorda
Is February a good time to fish in Boca Grande?
Yes. While cold fronts can slow the bite, redfish, sheepshead, and pompano are very active when targeted properly.
What fish are best to target during cold weather?
Redfish and sheepshead are the most consistent winter species, especially around deeper holes, creeks, and structure.
