Well, we had a really cold January here in Boca Grande but the fishing was great! Now it is starting to warm up and fishing will get even better! Water temperatures have slowly creeped back into the 70’s and there have been plenty of Redfish, Snook, Sheepshead, trout, permit and pompano all coming aboard on recent trips.
The Redfish fishing has been really good lately. We have had a lot of really nice fish in the 25’-30” inch range and this has been the best hatch of juvenile redfish I have seen in 10 years! Most of them are 12’-20” inches but they are aggressive little guys and have added to some really fun fishing. Seeing Juveniles or “Rat reds” is really exciting to see and next year these fish will 22”-25” inches so things are looking up.
The trout bite continues to be strong as well, I am seeing lots of fish in the 14”-20” range with a few over 25”. Again this is really great new after such a huge “red Tide” event!
Snook have been consistent as well. I am catching some really nice fish over 30” inches with the average being 22”-24” inches. As the water warms up over the next few weeks I expect this to get even better!
Sheepshead have continued to be day savers! There have been a lot of them inshore this year and for my clients who have wanted a nice fish dinner they have not been disappointed!
Small permit and nice pompano have also been a nice surprise lately. They fight great and have made for some nice action!
For those of you wanting to chase the “Silver King” I am booking up very fast. As of this post I only have 6 openings in April, 7 openings in May and 12 openings in June. There are still plenty of late season tarpon dates in July thru September but those will start to fill up as well.
