January 2025 brought its share of challenges, with chilly weather and strong winds causing fish to move unpredictably throughout the Boca Grande area. Despite the conditions, fish remained active for anglers willing to adjust, with strong seatrout action, steady redfish bites, acrobatic snook, reliable sheepshead, and even a few surprise pompano showing up along the way.

Seatrout – January 2025
Seatrout delivered a consistently exciting bite throughout January. Wintertime trout tend to school tightly, feed aggressively, and provide excellent table fare. Most fish ranged from 15–20 inches, with the occasional “gator” trout pushing past the 24-inch mark. Live shrimp produced steady action, while Berkley Gulp Dragontails proved especially effective when worked slowly along the bottom.

Sheepshead – Winter Pattern
Sheepshead remained a dependable winter target in the Boca Grande area. Often called “convict fish” or “striped bandits,” these fish are known for their subtle bites and strong fights, especially around structure. January is one of the best months to target sheepshead, and anglers willing to stay patient were rewarded with both quality action and excellent table fare.
Pomps and Reds
Redfish, Pompano & Mixed Bags
Redfish fishing stayed strong throughout January, with consistent catches of fish in the 20–24 inch range. While not giants, these fish put up solid fights, and productive days often resulted in 10–30 fish. Live shrimp rigged on a jig head was the top producer, and mixed bags frequently included pompano, black drum, and other winter species — a reminder that cold-weather fishing can still deliver plenty of surprises.
