August 2019 Fishing Report

August is one of my favorite months to fish in Punta Gorda, Boca Grande, Charlotte Harbor, and Pine Island Sound. Yes, the temperatures are warm, but the incredible variety of species available more than makes up for it.

Recent charters produced outstanding catches of:

• Tarpon
• Snook
• Redfish
• Spotted Seatrout
• Spanish Mackerel
• Mangrove Snapper
• Grouper
• Tripletail
• Permit
• Cobia
• Sharks

It’s hard to find another time of year when anglers have this many opportunities to catch a wide variety of fish in a single trip.

Tarpon Fishing Report – August 2019

The tarpon fishing remained excellent throughout August.

Several recent charters produced double-digit catch days, and the post-spawn fish showed no signs of slowing down.

The best live baits included:

• Live crabs
• Threadfin herring
• Ladyfish

One thing that really stood out during this period was how productive artificial lures became.

The DOA Bait Buster and several soft-plastic swimbaits consistently fooled fish, giving artificial anglers some outstanding opportunities to hook into the Silver King.

Permit Fishing Report

The permit fishing on the nearshore reefs continued producing quality fish.

Most permit ranged between 10 and 15 pounds, although several fish exceeded the 20-pound mark.

Live crabs were by far the most productive bait, although they became increasingly difficult to locate as the month progressed.

While targeting permit offshore, we also caught a variety of:

• Spanish mackerel
• Bonito
• Mangrove snapper

The nearshore reefs continued providing plenty of action throughout August.

Tripletail Fishing Report

Tripletail remained a consistent bonus species throughout the month.

Finding them required a little patience and plenty of searching, but once located they were eager to bite and provided a surprisingly strong fight.

They’re also one of my favorite fish for fresh fish tacos.

Snook Fishing Report

The snook fishing remained outstanding throughout Charlotte Harbor and the surrounding waters.

Many trips produced 30 to 50 snook per day, with most fish measuring between 20 and 25 inches.

Larger fish over 30 inches continued showing up regularly, giving anglers opportunities to hook into some quality snook throughout August.

Looking Back

One of the biggest takeaways from August 2019 was the incredible variety available throughout Southwest Florida.

Very few destinations offer anglers the opportunity to target tarpon in the morning, catch permit on the reefs, sight-fish tripletail, and finish the day catching snook or mangrove snapper.

That variety continues to make Punta Gorda, Boca Grande, Charlotte Harbor, and Pine Island Sound one of Florida’s premier inshore fishing destinations.
