🎣 August Fishing Report at a Glance

🐟 Tarpon: Excellent (9/10) – Post-spawn fish have spread throughout Charlotte Harbor, Pine Island Sound, and the Gulf beaches.

🐟 Snook: Excellent (9.5/10) – Fish are beginning to stack up in the passes as the spawning season continues.

🐟 Redfish: Very Good (8.5/10) – Schools continue to form while plenty of fish remain scattered across the flats and mangrove shorelines.

🐟 Mangrove Snapper: Excellent (9/10) – Summer rains continue improving the snapper bite around docks, bridges, canals, and deeper structure.

☀️ Conditions: August brings hot mornings, afternoon thunderstorms, and warm water temperatures. Early departures continue to provide the most comfortable conditions and the best fishing.

July wrapped up with some outstanding fishing, and August is shaping up to offer much of the same. While the summer heat is definitely here, the fish continue to cooperate, giving anglers plenty of opportunities throughout Punta Gorda, Boca Grande, Charlotte Harbor, Pine Island Sound, and the surrounding Gulf waters.

One of the things I enjoy most about August is the variety. We can target post-spawn tarpon one day, spend the next morning catching aggressive snook around the passes, or chase redfish and mangrove snapper throughout the backcountry. Every day has been a little different, but overall the fishing has remained very consistent.

One thing that has really stood out over the past couple of weeks is how much the fish have settled into their late-summer pattern. The tarpon are no longer concentrated like they were during the spawn, so success has become more about covering water and finding active fish than simply pulling up to one spot. The anglers willing to spend a little extra time looking have been rewarded with some excellent action.

On the other hand, the snook bite has become more predictable as larger numbers of fish continue moving into Boca Grande Pass, Captiva Pass, and Redfish Pass to spawn. If I had to pick one species to target this month for consistent action, it would be snook.

The recent summer rains have also helped keep bait moving throughout Charlotte Harbor and Pine Island Sound, and that’s improving the mangrove snapper bite almost daily. As we move deeper into August, I expect the overall fishing to remain very consistent, with plenty of opportunities to catch tarpon, snook, redfish, and snapper on the same trip.

The tarpon spawn has wrapped up, and the fish have spread throughout Southwest Florida.

Rather than seeing large concentrations in one area, we’re finding fish in several different locations depending on water conditions and bait.

Pine Island Sound has been holding solid numbers of tarpon, although we’ve experienced a touch of red tide in some areas. Fortunately, the effects have been fairly localized, and there have still been plenty of fish to target.

The Upper Charlotte Harbor continues to hold a good number of tarpon as well, but these fish are moving around quite a bit. Success has been coming to anglers willing to spend a little extra time searching until they locate active fish.

The most productive baits have been:

• Live threadfin herring
• Live pinfish
• Fresh-cut ladyfish

Artificial anglers have also been doing well using:

• DOA Bait Buster
• Berkley CullShad

The tarpon may be more spread out than earlier in the season, but once you find them they’re feeding aggressively.

The snook bite has only gotten better.

Large numbers of snook have started moving into the passes as they continue their spawning pattern.

Some of the most productive areas have included:

• Boca Grande Pass
• Captiva Pass
• Redfish Pass
• Gulf beaches
• East side of Charlotte Harbor

The passes have been producing the better-quality fish, especially around docks, channel edges, and current points. Don’t overlook the beaches either, where plenty of snook are still cruising the shoreline.

The east side of Charlotte Harbor continues producing lots of fish, although most have been on the smaller side.

The best live baits have been:

• Live pinfish
• Live grunts (especially in the passes)
• Whitebait along the east side

Artificial anglers have been catching plenty of fish with:

• Berkley Stick Shad
• Berkley PowerBait Paddlin’ Power Stinger in Sight Flash color

Early mornings continue to provide some outstanding action before the afternoon heat sets in.

The redfish continue transitioning into their late-summer schooling pattern.

While we’ve started finding several good schools, there are still plenty of fish scattered throughout the mangrove shorelines and backcountry.

The most productive areas recently have been:

• West Wall
• Islands throughout central Pine Island Sound
• Higher tides around the mangrove shorelines

The higher stages of the tide have definitely been producing the best action.

Top baits include:

• Live pinfish
• Fresh-cut ladyfish

For artificial anglers, it’s hard to beat an old favorite:

• Gold spoon

It’s simple, dependable, and continues producing fish year after year.

The mangrove snapper bite just keeps getting better.

As our summer rains continue, baitfish have become more abundant throughout Charlotte Harbor and Pine Island Sound, and the snapper have followed.

Whitebait and small live pinfish have been producing the best action.

The key has been locating structure that’s holding large amounts of bait. Bridges, docks, canal mouths, oyster bars, and deeper creek mouths have all been producing fish.

The biggest difference has been finding areas holding larger snapper instead of simply catching numbers of smaller fish.

If you locate good bait around quality structure, your chances of finding keeper-sized mangrove snapper increase dramatically.

August brings the heart of Southwest Florida’s summer pattern, with warm mornings, afternoon thunderstorms, and occasional tropical weather. While temperatures remain high, the fishing continues to be excellent throughout Punta Gorda, Boca Grande, Charlotte Harbor, and Pine Island Sound.

Our early morning departures allow us to take advantage of cooler temperatures, calmer water, and some of the best fishing conditions of the day before the afternoon storms develop.

Lightweight clothing, polarized sunglasses, sunscreen, and plenty of water remain essential this time of year. I always keep bottled water onboard, and you’re welcome to bring additional drinks if you’d like.

The recent rainfall has continued improving water quality in many areas while keeping baitfish active throughout the estuaries, beaches, and passes.

As we move toward September, I’ll be watching for even larger schools of redfish to begin forming throughout Charlotte Harbor and Pine Island Sound while the snook spawning bite remains strong around the passes. If our typical summer weather continues, I expect the mangrove snapper fishing to keep improving as more bait gathers around bridges, docks, and deeper structure.

The tarpon should remain spread throughout Boca Grande, Pine Island Sound, and Charlotte Harbor, so anglers willing to spend a little extra time searching for active fish should continue to enjoy excellent opportunities. Every season is a little different, but based on what I’m seeing now, I expect the late-summer fishing to stay productive across Southwest Florida

Absolutely. While the spawn is over, post-spawn tarpon continue feeding aggressively throughout Charlotte Harbor, Pine Island Sound, and the beaches around Boca Grande.

What bait works best in August?
