Summer has settled into Southwest Florida, afternoon rains have finally started cooling things off, and the fishing has been outstanding across Charlotte Harbor, Boca Grande Pass, Pine Island Sound, and the surrounding Gulf beaches.
July is one of my favorite months because there are so many opportunities. We can spend the day chasing trophy tarpon, catch dozens of snook on topwater, sight fish for schooling redfish, or put together a cooler full of delicious mangrove snapper. Every day has been a little different, but the overall fishing has remained incredibly consistent.
Whether you’re visiting Southwest Florida on vacation or you’re a local angler looking to experience some of the area’s best fishing, July is shaping up to be another outstanding month on the water.

July Tarpon Fishing Report β Boca Grande & Charlotte Harbor
f you’ve been waiting to book a Boca Grande Tarpon Fishing Charter, don’t think you’ve missed the season. Tarpon fishing is still excellent and should remain strong throughout July.
The fish have definitely settled into their post-spawn feeding pattern. After making the long spawning migration, they’re beginning to spread out and feed aggressively instead of staying concentrated in one area.
I’ve still been finding good numbers of fish in:
- Boca Grande Pass
- The beaches north and south of Boca Grande
- Upper Charlotte Harbor
One of the nice things about July is the variety of baits producing fish. We’ve been catching tarpon on:
- Live crabs
- Live pinfish
- Live threadfin herring
- Artificial lures
Every day is a little different, so being flexible has been the key. Some mornings they’ll eat crabs, while other days threadfins or pinfish are the better choice. Artificial anglers have been getting plenty of opportunities as well.

Snook Fishing Report
The snook fishing has been nothing short of outstanding.
If your goal is numbers, it’s hard to beat July right now. There are huge numbers of fish in the 22 to 25-inch range, and we’ve had plenty of action throughout the day.
The best areas have been:
- Gulf beaches
- Boca Grande Pass
- East side of Charlotte Harbor
- Whidden Creek
- Pine Island Sound
Live sardines have been the best bait, but they’re running extremely small right now. If you’re throwing your own cast net, I’d definitely recommend bringing a ΒΌ-inch mesh net because larger mesh isn’t holding the bait very well.
Live pinfish have also been producing consistently.
One of the most exciting bites has been first thing in the morning. The topwater action has been incredible, and the Berkley J-Walker in red and white has absolutely been the lure of choice. There aren’t many things better than watching a snook explode on a topwater plug at sunrise.

Redfish Fishing Report
The redfish are finally beginning to school up, which is always one of my favorite summer patterns.
Just over the past week, I’ve located three different schools, with most fish running between 24 and 30 inches.
The best opportunities have been during an incoming tide when the water pushes up around the mangrove islands.
Live sardines and live pinfish have both been excellent baits.
When the tide gets high enough for the fish to move underneath the mangroves, it’s tough to beat fresh-cut ladyfish. Fishing tight to the trees during the higher stages of the tide has been producing some quality fish.

Mangrove Snapper Fishing Report
The mangrove snapper bite continues to improve, and I expect it to get even better now that we’re finally seeing regular summer rains.
We’ve been catching quality snapper around:
- Deeper creeks
- Residential canals
- Dock pilings
- Bridges
- Oyster bars
- Any structure holding bait
As bait continues to move into Charlotte Harbor and Pine Island Sound, the snapper fishing should only improve through the rest of the summer.
They’re a great bonus while fishing for snook and redfish, and they’re one of the best-eating fish you’ll catch in Southwest Florida.
Current Fishing Conditions
Summer has definitely arrived here in Punta Gorda, Boca Grande, Charlotte Harbor, and Pine Island Sound, bringing warm temperatures, afternoon sea breezes, and our typical Florida afternoon thunderstorms. While July can certainly be hot, it’s also one of the best months to experience the incredible variety of fishing Southwest Florida has to offer.
Most of our trips begin early in the morning, allowing us to take advantage of cooler temperatures, calm water, and some of the most productive fishing of the day. It’s not uncommon to have outstanding action well before the afternoon showers develop.
The recent summer rains have been a welcome change. They’ve helped cool the water slightly, improve water quality throughout Charlotte Harbor, and keep baitfish moving around the beaches, passes, mangrove shorelines, and backcountry creeks. As a result, we’ve continued to see excellent fishing for tarpon, snook, redfish, and mangrove snapper.
If you’re fishing with me this month, I recommend wearing lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing, a wide-brim hat or cap, polarized sunglasses, and plenty of sunscreen. Staying hydrated is just as important during Florida’s summer heat. I always keep bottled water onboard, and you’re welcome to bring additional water or your favorite sports drink if you’d like.
Don’t let the summer heat keep you off the water. With an early start, a little preparation, and fish that are feeding aggressively, July continues to be one of my favorite months to fish.
